GOODBYE 2002
Robust looks back at the gains of 2002, and forward to the aspirations for 2003.

In 2002:
  • Murray & Roberts celebrated its 100th year as a leading South African business and the second year of the Rebuilding Murray & Roberts strategy.
  • For the second year running, Murray & Roberts exceeded the financial performance targets set by the Rebuilding strategy. Earnings doubled, operating cash flow was strong, operating margin improved substantially, the group achieved a 22% return on shareholders’ funds and payment of a dividend was resumed.
  • Shareholder value soared as the share gained further ground.
  • The cultural transformation underway at Murray & Roberts was extended further into the group with the process of leadership mentoring and executive coaching. Management and organisational changes were instituted to release the deeper potential of the group.
  • Sponsorship of the successful 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, support for NEPAD conferences and a new outdoor advertising campaign powered the Murray & Roberts brand.
  • Murray & Roberts, in partnership with ICC, won the 2002 Business Day award for the best corporate website.
  • Murray & Roberts companies made significant advances in health, safety and environmental management. Three operations received the NOSA Five Star award for outstanding achievement in occupational, health and environmental risk management, while a further four operations received the NOSA Four Star grading for health and safety systems. Two operations achieved ISO 14001 certification, an internationally recognised standard for the implementation of an environmental management system.

Hello 2003

In its 2002 annual report, Murray & Roberts identified the challenges the group is now engaging to ensure its legitimacy in pursuit of sustainable group and value creation into the future.

In South Africa:

  • The pursuit of employment equity throughout the organisation;
  • The economic empowerment of all sectors of society;
  • The capacity to facilitate growth of direct investment into the economy.


Internationally:

  • Financial performance measured in US Dollars against global benchmarks;
  • Delivery performance measured against specified competitive criteria;
  • A governance framework defining best business practice.

 


Murray & Roberts hosted a billboard message from President Thabo Mbeki to welcome delegates to the African Union meeting in Durban.
