Murray & Roberts Des Baker Architecture Competition 2005
The 2005 Murray & Roberts Des Baker Awards ceremony was held at the Johannesburg Old Fort, Constitution Hill on Thursday evening 21st April.

With the competition theme “Body, Architecture, City”, the Old Fort proved to be a most appropriate venue and setting for the occasion with the finalist entries displayed on the walls of the prison cells.

The evening was hosted by Stephen Pell (Managing Director of Murray & Roberts Construction) and the winners were announced by Duzan Doepel on behalf of an international panel of six judges.

Brian Bruce, Group Chief Executive of Murray & Roberts and Professor Raymond Nkado, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment of the University of the Witwatersrand, handed over the prizes to much applause and cheer from the 800 students present.

The 2005 Murray & Roberts Des Baker awards went to:

Joint Winners:
University of Cape Town - Ruth Kirchman and Lauren Kemp
University of the Witwatersrand - Thomas Chapman and Andrew Bell
Each joint-winning team was awarded R 15,000, the Des Baker Floating Trophy and each member received a certificate of recognition.

Runner Up:
University of Pretoria - Rozanne Basson and Charissa du Pisanie
The runner-up team was awarded R 5,000 and each member received a certificate of recognition

Four entries received an honours mention.

After formalities ended the students enjoyed a party second to none which continued into the early hours of the next day with the party taking place on the parade ground of the old prison.
