Murray & Roberts JV awarded Pebble Bed Project Contract
Murray & Roberts, in joint venture with US company, Stone & Webster, and supported by empowerment contractor Proman Management Services, has been awarded a contract to supply professional services for the development of a demonstration power plant in South Africa that will use the new advanced Pebble Bed Modular Reactor nuclear technology.

If successfully implemented, the demonstration plant could be replicated in safe and economical operating nuclear plants internationally.

The demonstration plant is being developed by Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Limited (PBMR), which comprises Eskom, British Nuclear Fuels, the US power utility Exelon and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC).

Murray & Roberts recently completed the basic design and feasibility study of a nuclear fuel plant for PBMR.

“This award demonstrates that Murray & Roberts has the expertise to meet the stringent safety, quality and risk management demands of the international nuclear industry,” said Murray & Roberts Group Chief Executive, Brian Bruce.

“We anticipate that with the support of the teams from Murray & Roberts and Stone & Webster and the successful implementation and operation of the demonstration plant, PBMR will be able to bring technology to the US and other countries and build safe and economical operating nuclear power plants,” said David Nicholls, Chief Executive Officer of PBMR.

“We are privileged to partner PBMR in this pioneering development and will, as always, seek to leverage our knowledge and experience, and that of our technology partners, to deliver innovative solutions for PBMR,” said Sean Flanagan, Managing Director of Murray & Roberts Engineering Solutions, the company that will lead Murray & Roberts’ involvement in this project.
