APPOINTMENTS AND DEPARTURES

Appointment

Jerome Govender (31) has been appointed an executive director of Murray & Roberts Construction, with responsibility for the commercial, procurement and marketing functions of the company.

Jerome joined the group in 2002 after two years in the Department of Public Works where he participated in the formulation of a construction industry development strategy for government and the construction industry.

Departures

Murray & Roberts bids farewell to Lionel Lindsay, who will take early retirement from 30 June 2003.

Few people in the group could match Lionel’s experience of serving five successive chairmen and playing a role in the key developments that have shaped Murray & Roberts over the past three decades.

Lionel joined the Transvaal branch of Roberts Construction in 1972 and was appointed secretary of Murray & Roberts Holdings in 1979, the year of the historic merger of Roberts Construction and Murray & Stewart. He served under chairmen J D Roberts (for one board meeting) and Des Baker for two years.

After a brief period away from the group, Lionel returned and was re-appointed secretary of Murray & Roberts Holdings in 1986. He worked with chairmen Bill Beck, Marinus Daling and Dave Brink, experiencing first-hand the headiness and turbulence of the period of major acquisitions and the subsequent decline in the group’s fortunes in the 1990s.

Lionel leaves the group at a peak, having participated in the Rebuilding Murray & Roberts strategy which is restoring sustainable growth and creating new value.

We also bid farewell to Duncan Barry and Gaff Khan, two executives who have spent most of their working lives with Murray & Roberts.

Duncan has taken early retirement from 31 May 2003 after 27 years with the group.

His focus was largely on the construction sector, with active involvement in the mining and industrial markets and the early development of what is today Limpopo Province.

In recent years, Duncan has played an active role in the development of our comprehensive toll road and concession capability.

Gaff has resigned with effect from 30 June 2003 after 29 years with the group. He will pursue a new career in Cape Town, where he has spent all of his working life with Murray & Roberts, most recently as managing director of Murray & Roberts’ Cape construction company until the consolidation of the group’s construction activities in 2002.

We wish all three executives good fortune in their future endeavours.
