projects
four and a half months and going strong

The Impala No 20 Shaft Project is located north of No 12 Shaft on the north-west corner of the Impala mining lease area. The scope of the project covers the sinking and equipping of a main downcast shaft, an upcast ventilation shaft, service infrastructure on surface and all ancillary excavations and access development necessary to establish the footprint for 185 ktpm of Merensky and UG2 reef production.

The work will be done with a single sinking crew, completing the one shaft and then moving to the other. On completion of the pre-sink, the permanent sinking headgears, kibble and stage winders will be commissioned for the main sink.

The main shaft headgear and kibble winder will be supplied, installed and commissioned by the mine itself. All other winders and ventilation shaft headgear will be supplied, installed and commissioned by Murray & Roberts Cementation.

Site establishment started in November 2004. The main sink on the ventilation shaft is planned to commence in June 2005, and on the main shaft in August 2005. Shaft bottom in the ventilation shaft will be reached in May 2007 and in the main shaft in August 2007. Handover of the Impala No 20 shaft project is planned for late 2008.

SARS Alberton

Murray & Roberts Construction reports that work on the new 27 000m² office facility for the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in Alberton is currently progressing well.

Situated on the southern side adjacent to the N12 Southern Bypass at the Voortrekker Road off-ramp, the project comprises a double level Assessment Centre, triple level Enforcement Centre and an Inter-linking Training Centre.

The project was successfully negotiated with Kagiso Intaprop, following the recent completion of the Tiger Brands and Microsoft Head Offices in Bryanston.

The shell and core construction value amounts to approximately R75m with SARS undertaking their own internal services, fit out and finishes.

Site works commenced on 15 October 2004 with bulk earthworks and the installation of approximately 650 piles due to the poor soil conditions in the area. The concrete structures are on programme and virtually complete with wet trades and services following closely.

Sectional handovers are scheduled for September and October with the final handover in November 2005.  A joint venture at prime contractor level was established with Dlamini Construction, their share being 15%. The Contracts Manager on the project is Rui Santos and the Construction Director is Colin Steyn.

Kroondal project ahead of schedule
The contract mining project at Kroondal Platinum Mines is currently ahead of schedule on the overall contract. The Murray & Roberts Cementation project team is also ahead on sinking, ledging and stoping targets.

Kroondal Platinum Mine signed the mining contract agreement with Murray & Roberts Cementation in November 2003. The contract, which will continue through to the end of the mine yield in about April 2019, includes all underground activities, from the initial survey through to rock mechanics and geology.

This is the largest contract mining project ever undertaken by Murray & Roberts Cementation and currently employs some 2 032 people.

Kroondal Platinum Mine is located 120km north-west of Johannesburg on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex.  It is the lowest cost producing underground platinum mine in the world.
