THE WORK OF THE WORLD
Brigalia Bam, an independent director of Murray & Roberts for seven years and a member of the health, safety, environment and CSI committee, retired in June this year.

Born in Transkei, Brigalia qualified as a social worker with a post-graduate degree from the University of Chicago, specialising in teaching, social work, communications and management. Brigalia has achieved much in social upliftment in South Africa and the world. In 1999 she was appointed chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa.

A BRILLIANT CAREER
Peter Joubert was appointed as an independent director of the Murray & Roberts board in 1993 and retired in June this year. He served as chairman of the nomination committee and a member of the remuneration and human resources committee.

Peter’s career goes back to his five years at Rhodes University where he completed a BA DPWM, followed by an AMP at Harvard University in the early 1970s. He started out as a trainee at African Oxygen (Afrox) and rose through the ranks to become CE and then chairman of the company. Peter is chairman of BDFM Publishers, General Motors SA, Impala Platinum, Munich Reinsurance of Africa and Sandvik, and a director of numerous other companies. He was named one of the top five businessmen of the year by the Sunday Times in 1999.
