An Honorary Doctorate in Engineering (DEng, honoris causa)
was conferred on Brian Bruce by Stellenbosch University at a graduation
ceremony on 9 December 2004.
The citation for this honour recognises:
• the role he has played as a civil engineer in the management of major
and complex construction projects and the transformation of Murray &
Roberts into a focused global player in the construction and engineering
industry,
• the manner in which he provides leadership in his profession and the
industry and for his selfless dedication to sharing his time and expertise
with the tertiary education sector, and
• his participation and leadership both internationally and domestically
in many aspects of construction industry development. Most notably in
South Africa he has been the chairperson of the Inter-ministerial Task
Team on Construction Industry Development that prepared the legislation
for formation of the Construction Industry Development Board. He was
appointed by Cabinet as its first chairperson.
