The theme for the 2002 Murray & Roberts Des
Baker Awards for students of architecture was !aia land (mind) scape –
“deep trance”, a landscape interpretation centre. Entrants were asked to
focus on the development of cultural landscapes in southern Africa.
The winners were Deborah Kirkman, of
Pretoria University, Hein Raubenheimer, of Pretoria Technikon, John
Witshire and Sean van Schalkwyk, of Free State University and Neil du Toit
of Cape Town Technikon. Free State University hosted the 2002 Awards and
the competition was adjudicated by Rick Joy, an architect from Tucson,
Arizona; Niall McLaughlin a London-based architect; Andrew Makin, a Durban
architect; Henry Fagan, a Cape Town engineer and Zoe Henderson, an
archaeologist from the National Museum. |
