Murray & Roberts, in joint venture with SNC-Lavalin, has been awarded the EPCM contract to implement the second phase expansion of the Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique. This will result in an effective doubling of the capacity of the plant.

Murray & Robert subsidiary, Murray & Roberts Engineering Solutions and SNC-Lavalin installed Mozal 1 and the Hillside aluminium smelter in Richards Bay for their client, Billiton. Both smelters bear testimony to Murray & Roberts’ ability to deliver world class hi-tech industrial plants in difficult environments.

Construction on Mozal II has started and commissioning is scheduled for late 2003, with full production expected six months later.
